Abstract

Digital authoritarianism is not bound to regime type and reaches beyond national borders. This Panel addresses the global impact of digital authoritarianism. We encourage submissions that focus explicitly on the transnational dimension of digital authoritarian strategies. For instance, how do states influence and manipulate politics abroad through practices such as the installation of troll factories and cyber troops? What tactics do autocrats employ to target diaspora living abroad? Who are the actors of such attempts to influence opinion and what do transnational networks of these actors look like? This Panel deals with the fluidity of digital authoritarianism and also welcomes Papers which discuss the methodological challenges that come along with it.
