Affective Polarization and (Eroding) Democracy

Abstract

Political affective polarization, defined as the increasing negative emotions and affective responses towards political opponents, has become a growing concern for the stability of democracies worldwide. This phenomenon has been shown to have significant consequences for democratic institutions, from decreasing trust in political leaders and the media, to the erosion of social capital and the rise of political extremism. In this panel, we will explore how political affective polarization may erode democracy and discuss potential solutions to address this threat. Overall, this panel will provide insights into the ways in which political affective polarization can erode democracy and offer potential solutions to address this growing threat.
