Abstract

Is self-regulation dead? If so where, since when and why? And if it is not dead, then what happens to it, in a world of distrust, hybridity and state expansion? We raise those questions because they are central to the world of regulatory governance. We raise them because they do not have clear answers. Our panel is therefore looking to establish a community of researchers that connect self-regulatory designs to the general analysis of trends in regulatory governance. We suggest that dealing with these issues via the perspective of regulatory intermediaries and enhanced self-regulation is a useful perspective to explore the drivers, design, and effects of new and emerging modes of self-governance (Medzini, 2021; Medzini & Levi-Faur, 2023).
