The idea behind this panel is to promote the exchange of experiences by scholars of European integration and discuss how they (may want to) direct their teaching efforts in light of an EU in permanent crisis mode. The panel’s aim is therefore twofold, on the one hand to heed reflections on how we should combine the teaching of the main features of the European integration process from different perspectives, which can be found in the main textbooks adopted in each course, with the discussion of economic, monetary and fiscal governance and competition and trade policies, on the other hand on how to address the current challenges that the EU is facing, most notably in regard to energy and security issues. As it stands, the multiple, major crises are affecting the very basis of the EU, risking not only to overwhelm its crisis response capacity but also to overstretch people’s (and students’) understanding of the European integration process. The outcomes but also their understanding are fundamental for making the EU more resilient to shocks and European integration sustainable over time and need to be done justice in classes on European integration. The panel would have four contributions based on four books co-authored by the paper presenters to shed light and outline thoughts on what are, from different perspectives and angles, the current challenges facing the teaching of European integration.
