Diaspora communities often negotiate belonging by establishing unique strategies of resistance against the impacts of racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric, as well as the outcomes of socio-economic exclusion. In moments of micro and macro crises, individuals and collectives conjure up new narratives of belonging, situated by combinations of political, cultural, race-based and class-based identities. This panel explores various unconventional strategies that disrupt mainstream narratives of migrant communities. We are interested in the nuanced ways diasporic groups harness identity to form alliances, engage in radical activism and / or dismantle entrenched cultural myths and stereotypes. There is still a lack of understanding about how these strategies operate to challenge normative or traditional ethnic, national and religious existence, while simultaneously trying to reimagine belonging. Through this lens the panel will discuss contexts of diaspora campaigns, voluntary associations, resistance and community organisations.
