Political representation is a constitutive process that occurs both within and beyond parliamentary chambers. This panel will explore extra-parliamentary action including advocacy and activism from diverse perspectives. Papers concern the perspectives and experiences of intersectionally marginalised extra parliamentary (civil society) representatives, in diverse geographical contexts. Specifically, papers explore intersectionality, memorialization, and activism in South Africa, focusing on the failure of democratic state institutions to address the intersectional experiences of female activists; Black feminism/womanism in South Africa and creative efforts to articulate and represent such perspectives; the experiences of Syrian refugee women in Turkey; the work of refugee women’s organisations in the UK concerning refugee women’s political agency; and the advocacy of women’s groups in relation to the Senate in Canada and opportunities for substantive representation.
