Abstract

This panel considers the ‘audiences’ for claims-makers in political representation, namely the (voting) public in diverse contexts. Papers theorise the audience as co-producers of political representation, utilising examples from Flemish politics; consider perceptions of female candidates in Morocco, as well as, in a separate paper, the influence of audience/public perceptions on other voters’ willingness to elect women in Morocco; explore perceptions of not being well represented among racially minoritized people in France, Germany and the Netherlands, asking when and for whom visibility in representation leads to emancipation (good representation) or marginalization (misrepresentation); and the affective political labour of women and the disadvantaged ways that women are incorporated into political systems in India, Indonesia and Australia.
