In highly differentiated societies, various exchange relations between state and market, politics and economy exist. While these phenomena are well researched in democracies (governance, good governance), some core questions still remain open with regard to Autocracies: 1) Are there specific patterns of interaction between polity and economy? 2) Are autocracies developing unique mechanisms of governance? 3) Who are central actors in these interrelations? Especially for the OECD-World highly differentiated theories and models exist to assess the interrelation of polity and economy (Hall/Soskice; Esping-Andersen), while well defined approaches only exist for one type of autocracies: those based on Rentier Economies (Luciani). Other systematic approaches are seldom found. Questions of performance and governance are often discussed in a tradition of modernization theory and with regard to promotion of democratic transition, or are referred to as strategies of economic legitimacy. But when we look at phenomena like state-capitalist developments in China or Russia, different developmental paths seem to evolve that go far beyond questions of modernization, legitimacy, rentier economies and neo-patrimonialist networks. Are new types of capitalisms and welfare states emerging that could be solid grounds for the consolidation of dictatorships? Thus this panel intends to be a platform for scientists using established and/or developing new theoretical frameworks to assess the interfaces of dictatorship and capitalism empirically. These can include questions adressing: the accumulation of capital in autocracies; performance and governance of authoritarian political economies (APE); the rise of three worlds of capitalism (incorporated capitalism); a "forth way" of welfare and social policies in dictatorships; Neo-Patrimonialism as Governance; Private-Dictator-Partnerships; and functional conditions of Governance within the dualism of freedom and repression.
