Violence comes in many forms: from the barrel of a gun, to the end of a fist, through to the discursive power of language and the power of the symbolic, imagination and culture constructing some nations, some values, some beliefs and indeed some people as unworthy of dignity or of life itself. Despite being exhaustively documented and analyzed through a range of disciplinary lenses, the costs (in all senses) of violence are spiraling. This is notably the case in the context of gendered violence given the intimacy between gender and violence. We invite papers, theoretical and empirical, which address contemporary manifestations of gendered violence on the (national/international) political landscape. We are particular interested in the following themes: (i) the relationship between the global financial recession and the gendered and violent character of neo-liberal capitalism; (ii) the ineffectiveness of state and non-state interventions in reducing the incidence of sexual violence; (iii) the effectiveness of human rights and gender mainstreaming legislation in post-conflict reconstruction. We welcome inter-disciplinary contributions and encourage theoretically and methodologically eclectic and imaginative interpretations of questions about gendered violence and the specific contexts. We will also consider papers which fall outside these specific empirical remits.
