The course is designed for researchers who are planning or currently conducting their own research project using qualitative data such as interviews, transcripts, speeches, or various types of documents. It not only teaches the basics of using the software but also provides guidance on the various steps of the research process. The course is aimed at individuals working at the Master’s level and above and is capped at a maximum of 16 participants so that the teaching team can cater to the specific needs of everyone.
In this course, you will learn how to conduct your own research using MAXQDA24 during the different stages of the research process – from importing and exploring data to analysing data with sophisticated visual tools. The workshop aims to provide an overview that prepares you to independently work with the software for academic research projects.
By the end of the course, you will learn:
By the end of this course, you will have the ideal foundation for implementing analytical methods for qualitative research such as qualitative content analysis, thematic analysis and grounded theory. The course itself is open-ended, allowing you to integrate your chosen research methodology into the try-at-home exercises and beyond. In doing so, the course guide you through the features of the software while also providing basic methodological training in the coding process and mixed methods analysis.
3 ECTS credits awarded for engaging fully in class activities.
1 additional ECTS credit awarded for completing a post-course assignment.
Andreas Müller has been working as a professional trainer for qualitative data analysis software such as MAXQDA and ATLAS.ti for over 6 years. As a research and methods coach, he is experienced in a wide range of qualitative methods including grounded theory, content analysis and thematic analysis. Andreas works with clients from a wide range of academic disciplines, from healthcare to education to business, and specialises in the analysis of qualitative text, video and mixed methods data.
This course follows the logic of simulating an entire research project. In the first session, we will establish a common ground by learning the basics of MAXQDA. The four subsequent sessions will advance your research project by teaching you more advanced features, following this course outline.
Learn how to code your data, write memos, and create document variables.
Learn advanced ways of coding as well as reworking your code system with Smart Coding and Creative Coding.
Integrate images, videos, and audio data into the research process and learn how to handle transcripts of audio data.
Integrate and analyse document variables, create flexible groups via mixed methods analysis, and learn the basics of integrating survey data into your reserach project.
Finish up the analysis of your coded data by using advanced Visual Tools and the AI Assist.
The try-at-home exercise will provide you with options for advancing with your own project, with follow-up instructions tailored to your needs. You may complete a written report on these exercises as a post-course assignment for an additional ECTS credit point.
Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own data to this course. Common example data will be provided for the first day. For the remainder of the course, you will benefit most from using your own data, especially for the try-at-home exercises.
The course consists of five live teaching sessions, three hours each. These sessions combine live instruction with interactive exercises. In addition to these live sessions, there will be voluntary try-at-home exercises between sessions. These exercises allow you to try out the techniques you have learnt on your own data and discuss your findings and challenges in the next class. Literature for additional reading is provided but not required to complete the course. The instructor will also conduct live Q&A sessions and offer designated office hours for one-to-one consultations.
This course introduces you to the wide range of functions of MAXQDA24, a software for the analysis of qualitative data. This is an introductory course which doesn't require prior knowledge of the software, although a basic familiarity with qualitative research methods and in particular the process of 'coding' is highly beneficial.
Participants will get the most out of the course if they bring their own data in the form of Word or PDF files. You will need access to your own computer (Windows or MAC) to follow the course. A software license is provided for the duration of the course.
As a participant in this course, you will engage in a variety of learning activities designed to deepen your understanding and mastery of the subject matter. While the cornerstone of your learning experience will be the daily live teaching sessions, which total three hours each day across the five days of the course, your learning commitment extends beyond these sessions.
Upon payment and registration for the course, you will gain access to our Learning Management System (LMS) approximately two weeks before the course start date. Here, you will have access to course materials such as pre-course readings. The time commitment required to familiarise yourself with the content and complete any pre-course tasks is estimated to be approximately 20 hours per week leading up to the start date.
During the course week, you are expected to dedicate approximately two-three hours per day to prepare and work on assignments.
Each course offers the opportunity to be awarded three ECTS credits. Should you wish to earn a 4th credit, you will need to complete a post-course assignment, which will involve approximately 25 hours of work.
This comprehensive approach ensures that you not only attend the live sessions but also engage deeply with the course material, participate actively, and complete assessments to solidify your learning.
This course description may be subject to subsequent adaptations (e.g. taking into account new developments in the field, participant demands, group size, etc.). Registered participants will be informed at the time of change.
By registering for this course, you confirm that you possess the knowledge required to follow it. The instructor will not teach these prerequisite items. If in doubt, please contact us before registering.
