The Obama Administration and International Terrorism

144

Abstract

This panel will focus on the Obama administration’s efforts in combating the threats posed to the US and its interests by international terrorism. To what extent has the legacy of George W Bush’s “war on terror” continued to dominate Obama’s policy toward international terrorism? How successfully has Obama redefined and refocused US counter-terrorism policy? What have been the consequences for Obama’s counter-terrorism policy of the changes in policy toward Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan? What impact has the continued focus on international terrorism had on other aspects of US foreign policy? Have the “realities” of meeting the threat of terrorism caused Obama to step back from his rhetorical claims to a more “moral” counter-terrorism? What impact have Obama’s policies had on the intelligence services in the US?
