Presenter: Janica Ezzeldien, University of Glasgow Chair: Mariken van der Velden, VU Amsterdam My research focuses on forced displacement, race, and visuality, particularly examining how visual representations of refugees in news media shape audience perceptions of forcibly displaced individuals. I look at how they operate at an affective level to develop an "affective register of refugeeness". I am interested in understanding the temporal and Spatial dimensions of how some bodies come to be perceived as refugees whilst others continue to be migratised. For this, I look at German news coverage of three time periods (1999/00, 2015/16 and 2022/23), use survey experiments and investigate how humour becomes a site for understanding migration, displacement and refugeeness in the German context.
