Abstract

Ten years after the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR), the landscape of EU social legislation and governance has evolved substantially. This roundtable takes stock of the EPSR’s impact over the past decade, revisiting its political significance, its effectiveness as a driver of policy reform and the tensions that continue to shape its implementation across Member States. Bringing together scholars working on social Europe, EU law and governance, domestic compliance and the political economy of welfare reforms, the session re-assesses whether the EPSR has delivered on its promise to rebalance the Union’s social and economic dimensions. The discussion will identify the mechanisms through which the Pillar has influenced policy debates, the potential and limitations of the instruments for its delivery, and the ways in which successive economic and (geo-)political crises have reframed the social dimension of European integration.
