Abstract

[Panel in Portuguese] This panel adopts a comparative Brazil-Argentina perspective to analyze gender as a strategic field of political contestation, linking the anti-gender backlash to democratic erosion. Framed by the Bolsonaro and Milei government’s targeting of gender rights, it investigates how this transnational project impacts national and local power dynamics. The papers explore this intersection from multiple angles. They analyze how gendered and racialized power is produced within Brazil’s local institutions, focusing on the rise of conservative and far-right women. Research on municipal politics and party organization challenges assumptions that women’s presence—especially of Black women—equates to progressive agendas, revealing instead how ideological plurality and party gatekeeping shape political trajectories. The panel connects disputes over representation to the concrete infrastructures that constrain women’s advancement, such as candidate selection and informal networks, while examining “family” as a key discursive anchor. By juxtaposing the macro-analysis of anti-gender politics as a driver of democratic crisis with the micro-politics of local institutions, the panel offers a multilevel understanding of how attacks on gender equality reshape political representation, access to power, and democracy in Latin America.
