Abstract

This panel invites theoretical and empirical contributions that focus on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) politics and policy are shaped by uncertainties of our times such as environmental problems, rise of populism, and changing security landscape. Is AI exacerbating or helping to mitigate these problems, and what role do politics and policy play in these dynamics? Governments and societies around the world are often looking to AI as a solution, for example, to their struggling health and education systems, public services, and environmental problems. At the same time, concerns are growing that AI is creating new problems and exacerbating existing ones including social cohesion, welfare, and security. This panel aims to facilitate discussion of what kind of AI politics and policy would be appropriate to tackle the major problems of our times.
