Abstract

This interdisciplinary panel will explore how the politics and politicisation of competition policy are shaping and reshaping policy debates, policy design, and the role, activities, and status of (independent) competition authorities. The papers in the panel look at competition policy at the EU and national level – including also the interplay between the levels – and analyse the impact of populism, geopolitical tensions, societal debates and concerns, and the rise of industrial policy, and political concern with international competitiveness. In addition, the papers assess the implications of the changes, including in terms of business power and capture.
