Abstract

In the context of intensifying geopolitical competition, the European Union’s relations with its neighbouring regions have become increasingly complex and politicised. The EU today operates in a crowded external environment, competing with global and regional actors such as China and Russia, while at the same time facing shifting perceptions of the EU among citizens in partner countries regarding its credibility, reliability, and influence. These dynamics are particularly visible in countries excluded from enlargement perspectives, as well as across the Southern Neighbourhood. This panel brings together papers that examine the challenges facing both the EU and its partner countries in an increasingly unstable and contested international system.
