Abstract

European minority candidates, like Barack Obama, must win support from white voters as well as co-ethnic minorities in order to break through electorally. To understand whether a 'European Obama' will emerge we need to examine the attitudes of white European voters towards immigrant-origin minorities and the policies designed to promote social and political integration. How is support or opposition to such candidates and/or such policies mobilized? To what extent and how does prejudice or xenophobia affect attitudes? This panel invites innovative research into the determinants, nature, and effects of majority public opinion towards immigrant-origin minorities and immigration and incorporation policies.
