The introduction of co-decision is now two decades ago. How much the European Parliament is today taken for granted as an equal co-legislator with the Council can be seen from the new term "ordinary legislative procedure", introduced in the Lisbon Treaty. Yet many aspects of the European Parliament's role within the greater institutional setting of the EU are still understood badly. This is true in particular for questions of inter-institutional politics that transcend the conventional, "horizontal" balance-of-power debates and bring in different actors and arenas. In this sense, the contributions to this panel address questions regarding the "vertical" relations between the EP and domestic electorates, constituencies, parties, and parliaments. Against this backdrop, the panel engages with papers on topics such as EP elections and the Europeansation of domestic electoral politics, territorial representation via EP and via regional parliaments and the role of MEPs as link between domestic and supranational politics.
