Abstract

How is security governed in a globalized world? How are complex threats and risks managed? How do new practices shape the understanding of national and international security? How can we analyze various types of practices through which security is constructed and performed? Building on the constructivist and critical strands of security studies, this panel seeks to bring together theoretically and methodologically innovative contributions which deal with the issues of contemporary security governance and the practices it brings about. The papers on this panel explore various discursive and non-discursive practices through which security is governed nowadays and discuss how they shape and are shaped by broader political and social conditions at both national and international level. Focusing on various empirical topics, the papers shall address whether and how the new types of security practices contribute to constructing new conceptual and institutional bridges between different social fields and between the national and the international spheres in particular.
