Abstract

One of the most frequently heard propositions about political parties is that their behaviour is somehow constrained by cleavages. We often make this statement in discussing their coalition behaviour, electoral appeals and success, policies, and so forth. Yet, there are very few analysis the would rigorously separate the measurement of the supposed clause (cleavages) from the presumed consequences. This panel invites paper proposals that contribute to the conceptual and measurement issues involved in discussing the political consequences of changes in social cleavages and/or provide novel empirical tests of propositions about such links.
