One of the most essential 'products' political parties 'market' during elections is their list of candidates for national office. How are these 'products', however, developed? How is the process of candidate recruitment, rank-ordering and district placement conducted in European parties? Although this topic has received comparative attention before in Western Europe, the aim of the current panel will be to bring in new data and research from Central and Eastern Europe. The time is right for a re-examination of this phenomenon, since political parties in the region are becoming more and more institutionalized, and therefore more regular patterns of candidate selection can now be compared. Papers dealing more broadly with questions of party institutionalization are also welcome.
