Abstract

The panel encompasses papers comparatively analysing the demand and / or supply side of youth unemployment in Member States of the EU during the recent financial and economic crisis. During the international financial crisis countries face multiple challenges to their labour markets to which they reacted by implementing various labour market policy measures. Concerning their labour market reactions to the financial crisis the EU member states face multiple challenges. On the one hand, they have to increase the competitiveness of their labour markets, handle problems caused by social hardships and invest in future development. On the other hand, many of them are forced to consolidate their budgets and reduce debt in order to avoid national bankruptcy. The different paper proposals combine analyzes of regional markets for youth employment as well as comparative studies for all European countries. Furthermore they bring in different theoretical perspectives as well as methodological approaches to analyse the causes and effects of youth unemployment and effectiveness of labour market policies especially for young people in Europe in times of crisis.
