Building: SR, Floor: 1, Room: 2

Thursday 13:00 - 14:30 CEST (03/07/2014)

Abstract

The main purpose of this panel is to assess the role of the internal actors and factors and their influence in the development of democracy. It is considered primary to study characteristics of the political system as well as the civil sphere in a number of countries. Since the beginning of Arab uprisings, the world observes with special interest the islamist movements and their political engagement. Moreover, the political power is equally claimed by the military, converting those political actors to important elements of a possible democratic transition. The nature of civil society movements, including youth involvement also shapes the new political reality in the Middle East and north Africa. The main question that will be answered is whether these transition processes are prevailed by forces that favour or impede democratisation.
