This panel focuses on the challenge facing contemporary democracies in maintaining and fostering an informed, attentive, and participating citizenry. The internet is part of the problem, since, compared to the rest of the population, the generation that grew up with it is less attentive to politics and participates in it less. Nevertheless, the Internet will have to be part of any solution. In this panel we address one relevant application of the Internet, VAAs, with reports on research into their real and potential impact on political engagement, interest, knowledge, participation and efficacy, as well as their use in civic education.
