Kant is usually referred to as one of the most important founding fathers of the modern conception of human rights. This panel will be dealing with the various aspects of Kant’s theory of rights and human rights. We will particularly explore the following themes: • How the ideas of human dignity and human rights are related to his general philosophical perspective; • How Kant’s philosophy of rights and human rights are related to each other and to the theories of rights historically preceding them; • The significance and role Kant recognizes for the concept of rights in politics and law; • Whether a conception of human rights derived from Kant’s philosophy should be ethical or juridical.
