These four papers pursue some of the key themes of this section, especially in terms of identity and hierarchy and conceptions of power and hierarchy. However, we confine ourselves to a crucial and perhaps the pivotal timeframe for international constructions of hierarchy – the nineteenth century. This century was arguably the crucible of key practices of hierarchy which shape IR to the present, and it warrants consideration on its own terms. These papers explore topics related to hierarchy and colonialism, legal dimensions productive of hierarchy, and hierarchy and great power strategy.
