Abstract

Leaders are bound to face different types of crisis whilst in power. These range from global economic crises to discrete events affecting parts of their population such as natural disasters or even personal scandals they (or members of their administration, which may threaten cabinet stability) may be involved in. Each of these forms of crisis call for different responses, but leadership styles and institutions also condition the way leaders interpret the situation they are facing, their choices and constraints in terms of communication and action, and how voters perceive their performance in dealing with the issue at hand. This panel invites contributions on how varying types of crises, degrees of clarity of responsibility, opportunities for blame avoidance and leader charisma amongst others influence leaders’ reactions to events and the effect of these crises on their tenure.
