An analysis of natural disasters on Canadian provincial governments

What is the effect of natural disasters and disaster-related casualties on the tenure of local and regional officials? Recent literature indicates that the effects of disasters and disaster-casualties varies across political systems. Democrats are unaffected by disasters but are replaced in the case of large casualties, while autocrats extend their tenure in office when people are killed by extreme events. We extend this research to the analysis of tenure in office of Canadian Premiers; this allows us to keep national institutions constant and explore new causal effects of natural hazards on political survival. Hence, we contribute to three different agendas: the effects of natural disasters, political survival, and studies of Canadian Premierships.
