I would like to propose a panel with the title: "Borders, sovereignty and self-determination in contemporary Europe". The standing group on federalism and regionalism is prepared to include our panel in their section proposal. This panel would include papers from Klaus-Jürgen Nagel/Ferran Requejo, Nicolas Levrat, and Adam Holesch. The common denominator of the panel is bound around the argument that European borders are rescaling as new economic, social and political systems emerge above, below and across the state system, complementing but not replacing the state. In their papers the four authors principally ask empirical and conceptual questions about the meaning of borders and boundaries in Europe. They focus on different factors, forces and trends that redefine borders and territory in contemporary Europe, with a specific focus on political and legal developments. In this panel the authors will present their final drafts from our wider project, which is organized by the Barcelona Institut of International Studies (IBEI); the Centre on Constitutional Change (CCC) (Edinburgh and Aberdeen); and the Centre for Global Governance Studies (Leuven).
