The study of institutions under dictatorship has thrived in the past decade. This panel examines a broad range of authoritarian institutions and takes a number of innovative perspectives. How to adequately conceptualise and measure institutional varieties of autocracy? How does institutional grip vary regionally within autocratic countries? Under what conditions to autocratic parliaments effectively issue legislation? How do democratic elections deteriorate into non-democratic ones? How do authoritarian institutions sometimes reverberate even beyond the demise of the autocratic regime? These and related questions will be discussed by panel contributors in a set of innovative papers on the varieties of authoritarian institutions.
