Abstract

African security governance constitutes a dense web of institutional interactions between international, regional, and national actors. This institutional density increases the potential for new forms of collaboration but also the likelihood of institutional conflicts. Institutional plurality can have productive potentials, e.g. by revealing deficiencies in the established governance frameworks. Meanwhile, inter-organizational conflicts can also have fragmenting effects on regulatory authority inducing efficiency undermining organizational competition. This panel invites empirical and theoretical papers analyzing these dynamics and effects of interactions between sub-regional, regional and international organizations shaping security governance in Africa.
