Abstract

International organisations (IOs) are central nodes in contemporary global governance. A shortcoming of much of the existing literature is its exclusive interest in interactions between IOs and their dominant member states. This panel widens our gaze in two important ways — first, by examining how rising states seek to reshape IO norms and behaviour and; second, by introducing the idea of IOs as ‘melting pots’, through which many different actors pursue their political agendas. Together, the papers in this panel progressively zoom out from IO relations with dominant member states to their relations with rising powers, civil society actors, transnational professions and domestic political formations, as well as other IOs. Covering areas as diverse as trade, development finance, governance reform, labour and children’s rights, the panel pushes towards a more holistic view of IOs activities.
