The Morality of Politics: Kantian Perspective

P352
Harry Lesser
University of Manchester

Abstract

Papers in this panel would examine Kant's arguments for conducting politics with regard to justice and human rights and not purely for self-interest or Realpolitik. Both what he has to say about internal politics and about relations between states would be considered. The aim would be both to understand what he said, which requires considering the historical context, and to explore whether and how it can be applied to the current situation. As well as examining his grounds for "making politics moral", the panel would also examine his recommendations as to how to act politically in a world in which morality and justice are in practice often disregarded.
