Abstract

The panel discusses the role of radicalized and populist mainstream parties in polarized party systems. It covers a broad spectrum of interactions of mainstream parties with their niche competitors as well as their policy impact on minority rights. The panel addresses the impact of the refugee crisis on radicalization of the mainstream and the role of populist mobilization in contemporary European mainstream politics. The panel covers the reaction of mainstream parties in Germany and the Visegrad Four. It also offers a broad cross-national perspective that looks at the demand side of populism and radical right mobilization.
