Abstract

This panel invites papers that examine and assess the roles played by national parliaments in EU decision-making processes. Relevant papers include those that focus on the impact of domestic legislatures on EU decision-making through EU-level actors’ responses. National parliaments vary considerably in the extent to which they have the capacity to hold national ministers to account. Relevant papers might examine the consequences of these differences for ministers’ behaviour in the Council of the EU. These analyses might include assessments of how domestic legislators exercise their scrutiny and control functions. In addition, we invite contributions that examine how EU politics and policies are portrayed in national legislatures: i.e. how national legislators respond to EU politics and policies. We particularly welcome papers that develop and test theories from the study of comparative legislatures in comparative research designs.
