NATO and US troops have been involved in Afghanistan for more than ten years. However, the defeated Taliban regrouped in the Afghan-Pakistani border “grey zones” and re-emerged as an important insurgent force that is gaining ground throughout its traditional strongholds in Afghanistan. What are the key parameters that have led to the current crisis and the exploding rise in violence in Afghanistan? Using the literature on economic causes of civil wars, this paper takes a comprehensive approach on identifying the causes of civil violence in Afghanistan, notably state fragility and economic development. we will explore what caused this particular civil war by first identifying if Afghanistan is a fragile state. Then, we will confront the reality of our case to the economic development factors that favors the Neo-Taliban insurgency. There is a dynamic since 1989 which seems to drive the country into civil war and we believe that an identification of the causes of civil wars and how they intertwine will offer a refreshing and comprehensive vision on the current crisis.
