With the end of the Cold War, and globalization process, new actors challenged role of state in IR. The traditional citizenship model constructed by the state became a matter of question and a tension between the state identity and social identity broke out. Turkey is one of the interesting cases to analyses this process. The democratization attempts in Turkey and search to meet various identity demands by successive governments have gained new dimensions. The recent reforms in Turkey with its new understanding are put into effect to reconcile the tension between state identity and social identity rather than being related to Turkey’s EU process. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of how the role of the state has been transformed especially in the context of social identity studies through the case of Turkey. This paper will highlight the current implementations and projects to re-arrange the identity shaping means.
