Abstract

This paper shall focus on protest coalitions making. Building on a large protest event dataset on protest events of Czech left CSOs, the paper attempts to explore the basic patterns relating the collective identities of Czech radical left (in terms of their ideology, sector or engagement in broader patterns of contention), relevant political environment (threats and opportunities), and their protest cooperation. The main research questions of the paper are: to what extent is protest cooperation of CSOs related to their collective identity? In what phases of political context evolution (i.e. closing or opening) the gap between collective identities and protest cooperation of CSOs become wider? The aim of the paper is two-fold: first, it aims at mapping and exploration of the dynamics of protest cooperation of Czech left CSOs. Second, it attempts to formulate some generalizations on the relation between these key aspects of contentious cooperation.
