Abstract

The current financial and economic crisis in Europe and beyond impacts the EU member states differently. Nevertheless, this paper is based on the argument that the crisis offers discursive opportunities for political actors in all member states to push for more neoliberal and market oriented policies. The paper analyzes one member state, ”a triple A credit rating country”, Finland, at the time of the European Parliamentary elections in April 2014 to answer the key research question: how is the economic crisis and its impact on gender equality policies constructed by different political parties in Finland? And with what significance to the country’s gender equality policies? The paper is based on political parties’ election material and key interviews with MEPs and candidates.
