This paper adopts a practice approach to diplomacy, and analyses the role of an artefact, the note de synthèse (policy memo) in the formation of a diplomatic position at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Based on an inductive case study of the practice of diplomatic drafting, this paper investigates the role of material practices in knowledge creation and diffusion in a distributed knowledge network.
