Abstract

How can feminist theory help us think about food-related issues? I shall consider several approaches: 1) How might the ethic of care help us think about issues related to food insecurity, sustainable agriculture, developing relations of care with animals, the earth, our own bodies, and caring for children and others? 2) Can women’s varied roles in feeding their families provide feminist insights about food? 3) Where does the feminist discussion of fat vs. thin bodies (see Bordo) need to go? Can we understand food, activity, and obesogens in relation to class and the built environments of long commutes and suburban strip malls rather than blaming fat people for being out of control? 4) Can a specifically feminist ethics or theory help us grapple with the ethical dimensions of agribusiness, including industrial food production, the proliferation of processed foods, advertising, influencing food and agriculture policies, and making high calorie food appealing and cheap?
