Is it realistic to ask agents to follow a vegan lifestyle? This is questionable. Veganism is still largely misunderstood, if not simply ignored. This is true within the philosophical community, where veganism is often treated as a marginal trend. However, a small but growing number of ethicists have started to seriously suggest that consumption patterns might impact the food industry in terms of accountability. Moral boycotts, and other kinds of "dollar-voting" attitudes, have become justifiable in many moral philosophies, and some are even presented as life commitments one ought to take. In this paper, I will argue that veganism is a requirement that can be grounded in utilitarian ethics. I will discuss the difficulties of following veganism by the book, and how these difficulties may hinder the relevancy of the pro-vegan argument. Eventually, I will call for a feasible version of veganism: Veganism Light.
