Abstract

In this paper we challenge the conventional wisdom about the political consequences of electoral systems. The deflationary pressures induced by coattails effects running from the election of more important office to the election to the less important office makes that the psychological effect increases party system fragmentation after the founding election. The empirical evidence comes from district-level data in legislative, regional and European elections in six countries.
