Abstract

Outcomes 1. Interactive learning improves the quality of students' learning. 2. Interactive learning enhances students' engagement in the seminar. 3. International and Slovak students prefer different learning methods. Description The education system is still mainly focused on lecturing, the survey by international and Slovak students studying the Pathological Physiology course at the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava revealed. Thus, I aimed to implement various interactive and peer learning methods during my seminars instead of lecturing. The international students have experienced more active learning approaches (peer learning and interactive learning) during their former studies than Slovak students and felt the advantage of the active approach. That could explain the difference in students' preferences. At the beginning of the course, Slovak students preferred lecturing significantly more than international students, even if compared to interactive learning. After implementing interactive and peer learning methods during my seminars, the survey showed students' appreciation of these methods. At the end of the course, international and Slovak students found interactive learning significantly more effective in their learning than at the beginning of the semester and in comparison to lecturing. Interestingly, at the end of the course, Slovak students felt that interactive learning helped them feel more engaged in their learning and was more enjoyable than at the beginning of the semester. Moreover, during the peer observation of my seminars, both colleagues confirmed higher students' activity and engagement during interactive and peer learning sections. After experiencing the interactive learning methods during my seminars, international and Slovak students appreciated the engagement and effectiveness these teaching approaches offer. Ways of engaging the audience During my contribution, the audience will have an opportunity to participate in a short survey via Slido. I want the audience to share their experience with the learning methods in their teaching. Participation format The abstract is for the face-to-face part of the conference.
