Abstract

The rise of the far right in South American politics has become consolidated as one of the main phenomena of recent decades in the region and has impacted several issues in the public debate. In this context, anti-feminism has become an important political banner for far-right parties in Argentina and Brazil, challenging women’s acquired rights and proposing setbacks. Based on the hypothesis that South American far-right movements use misogyny as a tool in political discourse to garner votes and replicate the rhetoric of the global far right, this research seeks to understand how this phenomenon unfolds in Argentina under President Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza) and in Brazil through Jair Bolsonaro (Liberal Party). Anti-feminism is part of a global far-right discourse, but it has specific features in each country and different forms of citizen adherence. The study will analyze the connection between the global and regional far right using discourse analysis in a comparative perspective as a qualitative methodology.
