Abstract

Debates about the reference to God in the European Draft Constitution or about whether Turkey is part of a European cultural identity have brought the issue of a Christian contribution to the discourse of a European identity to the fore. What is and has been the role of Christianity in European integration? What role, if any, should it play? This paper analyses the approach of Joseph Weiler, one of the leading scholars of integration theory, who asks from a Jewish perspective for a Christian contribution to Europe. His approach combines a partisan call for a religious resistance against secular domination with a highly sophisticated research agenda of translating religious notions in order to deal with secular political problems of European integration . This approach is tested against three cases of Christian contribution to Europe: the ecumenical initiative “Together for Europe” which brings together more than 200 Christian organisations from all denominations, the papal contribution of European patron saints and the new attractiveness of pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella on which the Council of Europe''s Cultural Routs programme of 1987 has had an initiative impact.
