Abstract

This Section aims to bring together researchers working on topics related to political violence. It seeks Papers dealing with various forms and manifestations of political violence, from lone actor violence, hate crimes and violent extremism to civil wars and insurgencies. The Section hopes to strengthen interaction between researchers studying political violence across disciplines and geographic regions. The Section welcomes Papers that use a variety of approaches and methods to study political violence – including Papers that apply multidisciplinary perspectives, extending beyond the common approaches of political science and sociology. Section Chairs seek in particular Papers that draw on empirical research and seek to understand political violence in terms of the wider political and geopolitical context in which actors are located. The Section invites Papers particularly (but not exclusively) on the following topics: • Political violence, hate speech and freedom of expression • Religiously inspired terrorism and radicalisation • Far-right extremist practices and discourses • Conditions of backlash to state violence • Radical direct action and protest violence • Intergenerational diffusion of political violence • Policing (post-)conflict societies • Border security and political violence • Dynamics, meanings and practices of violence in the context of inter-state war • Political violence and international business • Strategies of preventing and fostering resilience to violent extremism
