Abstract

Concepts in Political Science: from local to global - The Section is organised by the new Standing Group “Political Concepts” – The section will follow the mission statement of the new Standing Group “Political Concepts” and focus on the role of political concepts in political science in all possible respects: First, concepts serve at describing, analysing, explaining, and understanding the research objects as analytical and theoretical categories. Second, political concepts are themselves controversial and an object of politics and always related to changes in the real world: they are objects and indicators of political changes, conflicts or debates. The aim of the section thus is to discuss concepts in political science that serve at analysing, describing or reinventing phenomena ranging from the local to the global level. We will focus on concepts that both touch explicitly on global or world politics and the national or local level, but also discuss how concepts can be of use independent from any special regional or spatial focus. The panels taking place are: Concepts in Comparative Politics Concepts in the EU Multilevel System Contested Concepts in International Politics Democracy and the Demos Going Global with State Feminism: Methodological Challenges Parties and Legitimacy Politics of 'Populism' The Concept of Debate and its Analysis The Concept of Development in Contemporary Global Politics 1: Key Concepts in Tension (or 'The Trouble with Holism') The Concept of Development in Contemporary Global Politics 2: Universal Concepts, Local Translations The Concept of Ostracism: Democratic Exclusion and De-Selection
