Political science has a long tradition at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 1951, one of the first professorships for political science in Germany was established here. Today, the institute is one of the larger institutions in the field with eight research groups and over 45 scientists. The close cooperation with numerous European and international partner universities allows our students to gain intercultural experience and complete an internationally oriented course of study. Research at the Institute of Political Science enjoys an excellent reputation both nationally and internationally. For many years, the common research focus has been new forms of governance in multi-level systems. Current research concentrates on four interconnected areas: Standards of Governance, Local Politics and Multi-Level Administration, European Union, and Transformation of Energy and Climate Policy.
